Blue Mountains Gazette : August 11th 2010
2 VIETNAM VETS The Blue Mountains Gazette, Wednesday, 11 August, 2010 A welcome tradition returns to Springwood this year with the Vietnam Veterans and Associated Forces Memorial Day parade set to make a comeback on August 15. Missing from last year's memorial day, the parade is a highlight of the annual event that cele- brates the servicemen and women who fought in all conflicts and peacekeeping missions since WWII. The parade will step off at 11.30am, marching from the fire station up Macquarie Road to the Springwood cenotaph. A memorial service will be conducted by Chaplain, Lt Col Colin G. Aiken OAM, RFD at the end of the parade, where guest speaker will be Patricia Amphlett OAM, better known to her many fans as Little Pattie. Little Pattie will be accompanied by popular actor Lorrae Desmond MBE, as well as Dinah Lee, Jacqui DePaul, Lynne Fletcher, Sylvia Raye, Helen Keayes-Nolan and Nicki Gillis, who recently entertained troops in the Middle East, East Timor and Bougainville. The Springwood Salvation Army Band will provide music during the service and members of Blue Mountains Legacy assisted by the Army Cadets will collect donations during the singing of The Recessional. Tributes will be laid at the cenotaph and there will be various post-parade memorial functions to be held in outlets throughout the town in which all personnel on parade are welcome to participate. Springwood Rotary Club has agreed to provide a free barbecue for parade participants near the Royal Hotel after 1pm. Free rail, government bus and ferry travel to and from Springwood will also be available to all personnel in uniform or wearing awarded service decorations. In case of extremely bad weather, the service due to take place at the cenotaph will relocate to the Springwood Civic Centre. The beating of the retreat ceremony will be per- formed by the Lithgow Highland Pipe Band on Macquarie Road opposite the war memorial at 4pm, with the lowering of the Australian, US, and New Zealand flags by Army cadets from 21 ACU at 4.15pm to signify the end of the day.
